Another ass-inine, frivolous A.C.L.U. lawsuit

The A.C.L.U. (American Civil Liberties Union) idiots have taken it upon themselves to file a lawsuit against Dixie County, Florida because a statue of the Ten Commandments (donated by a local businessman), standing in front of a building that houses the Courthouse and several other public offices in Cross City is: "in effect, thumbing its nose at the Constitution." Note, that this lawsuit was NOT filed by an individual plaintiff (because they couldn't find any local residents willing to sue!), so the A.C.L.U. decided it was their duty to take on the task of trying to force the the County to remove the monument. They believe the words "LOVE GOD AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS" might be offensive and intimidating to those who have religious beliefs that are not based on Judeo-Christian doctrine.

Don't these people have anything better to do with their time or money!!?? Not to mention wasting tax payers' dollars, by forcing the County to defend their right to keep the statue intact.

I dunno BCF, they keep sending me donation solicitations and I keep sending everything back in the envelope (including the envelope it came in) with a note telling them I will never send them money so stop wasting theirs, to no avail! They truly are idiots who, most of the time, represent the scum of the earth and issues that don't deserve representation.

Thanks for posting it on your blog!
Cheers,

I struggle with the entire concept of the ACLU. On one hand they seem to take on battles that I hate. On the other hand, I think our system need to keep moving or it grows stale and people will stop supporting it. We are far the most progressive Government in the world. Would we continue to be if we didn't have free speech and people willing to take on windmills and tilt them. I do personally believe that the Constitution says we have freedom of religion not freedom from religion. If someone doesn't have the right to tell me how to celebrate or "serve" my religion, why can they tell me I can't put up the 10 commandments. It is also the basis for our laws as well as the "olde English Laws". Confused but not hateful. MUD

Well Anon, you make some good points, the ACLU is a double edged sword and perhaps should be, however the bias they continue to display against the expression of religious faith tarnishes any good they have done.

This is a really informative piece, from Hillsdale College' Imprimis series - “Origins and Dangers of the ‘Wall of Separation’ Between Church and State” http://www.hillsdale.edu/imprimis/2006/10/ which backs your stand on Freedom of as to frpm religion. Gotta love Imprimis they mail you these articles for free.

One has to suppose that the ACLU is striking a blow for offended atheists, anyone of whom could have his day ruined by being commanded to love god. Atheists, and the ACLU, need to adopt Laztheism... This simply step would end these tumultuous, not to mention, silly, outbursts.

It is all in who does the commanding. If it is simply a sign, monument or poster, who cares. Now, If the Governmnet said I had to, "get the guns boys, the end is near". MUD aka Dennis Petty posting on ridignwithmud@blogspot.com

It was a 5 ft granite monument donated by a local businessman. It wasn't as if the county commissioned the piece using tax payer's dollars.

And people need to get thicker skins. People are far too easily offended, these days.

I look forward to the day when religion is taken out of the politics equation alltogether.

I don't think it should have any leverage on politics at all. Politics should consider the good of the people in general, no matter what their religion is. The issue of this bronze monument should not be a political issue whatsoever (in fact, it shouldn't be an issue at all). The fact that people are still going around proclaiming God is ridiculous in itself.

The sooner people stop believing in 'higher beings', the better.

A lot of pain, anguish and death will be stopped.

"The sooner people stop believing in 'higher beings', the better."

This is such a facile argument. I might just as easily argue that when people stop beliveing in secular solutions such as communism a whole lot of pain, anquish and death will be stopped.

What belief system has killed more than any other? Communism in all its manifestations throughout the 20th century has far outstripped any harm reigious belief has caused. Faith let us not forget, has also done far more good than harm in this world despite man's attempt to abuse it.

It's not *belief* in a Higher Being, Lambent, that is the root cause of pain, anguish and death, but rather man's interpretation of the various religious doctrines that create the conflict. Ufortunately, organized religion has always been divisive, and therein lies the problem. But I have had too many amazing experiences to not believe in a benevolent and merciful GOD.

And I would agree with you, Anon, that Communism has caused much pain, anguish and death with their repressive system of government.

And anonymous, non-belief in a God doesn't imply that we have to be communist. I can be athiest and capitalist too.
