Many of them have made their way back to England, further radicalized, and now the Brits are very worried. Scotland Yard believes there are around 200 or so potential terrorists running around London.
Scotland Yard chief Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe today called for a major overhaul of Britain’s counter-terrorism powers as he warned that close to 200 potentially “militarised” fighters returning from Iraq and Syria are already in London. No wonder they've raised the terror threat to "severe,"
The Met Commissioner said urgent action is needed because of the growing threat and the risk of a further rapid influx of dangerous militants into the capital as the battle with Islamic State escalates. He called on ministers to respond by considering the return of control orders and new legislation to strip British fighters of their passports to stop them coming back to this country.
Sir Bernard said there should be an automatic legal presumption that anyone returning from Syria or Iraq had been engaged in terrorism and he requested a major injection of extra funding to help police and intelligence agencies cope with the rise in terror suspects.
